What Is Non-Destructive Digging?
Non-destructive digging (NDD) — also called vacuum excavation or hydro excavation — is a method of safely excavating around underground services using high-pressure water and a powerful vacuum truck, rather than a mechanical bucket or chain. The water breaks up the ground, and the vacuum lifts the loose material into the truck's debris tank. Because nothing mechanical cuts into the soil, buried assets such as gas mains, water pipes, communication conduits, electrical cables and fibre optic networks can be exposed without damaging them.
For civil construction, infrastructure, utilities and commercial projects across the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and South East Queensland, NDD has become the standard first step before any mechanical excavation near known services. Dial Before You Dig plans tell you roughly where assets run — vacuum excavation confirms exactly where they are, and at what depth, before an excavator ever touches the ground.
Why Crews Use NDD Instead of a Bucket
Striking a live service carries serious costs: immediate danger to the crew, damage liability, project delays while the asset owner repairs the network, and regulatory exposure. A vacuum excavation truck removes that risk on the highest-consequence digs. The other advantage is precision — NDD produces a small, clean pothole, which means less spoil to cart away, less reinstatement, and far less disruption to traffic and neighbouring properties than a traditional open trench.
Where Non-Destructive Digging Is Used
- Potholing and service locating before trenching or piling
- Exposing existing services for tie-ins, repairs and inspections
- Trenching in congested ground around live networks
- Pit and manhole cleaning, and slurry or material removal
- Pole and sign hole excavation where precision matters

NDD FAQs
What is the difference between NDD and traditional excavation?
Mechanical digging uses a bucket or chain that can tear into buried pipes and cables. Non-destructive digging uses high-pressure water and a vacuum to break up and remove soil, so services can be exposed without damage. On most SEQ projects it is the required method for the first dig near known services.
Can vacuum excavation be used in all ground conditions?
NDD works in most soil types found across South East Queensland, including clay and sandy soils. Ground with large rocks or solid rock can slow the process, so it's worth mentioning expected ground conditions when you request a quote.
What is potholing?
Potholing means digging a small, precise hole to physically confirm the location and depth of an underground service before larger works begin. Vacuum excavation is the safest way to pothole because it exposes the asset without touching it with steel.
Do you provide operators with the vac truck?
Yes. Stroud Plant Hire provides operated vacuum excavation trucks — a trained operator comes with the truck for the duration of the job, from potholing through to trenching and pit cleaning.
